WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Chaim Potok and Aaron Posner worked closely together to adapt Potok's 1967 novel, the Chosen, into this tightly-knit and moving drama about two very dissimilar Jewish boys whose unlikely friendship creates tension among their families and their worlds. A standing-room-only hit wherever it has played, this award-winning adaptation from the award-winning novel is set in Brooklyn during World War II. The story centers around young Reuven Malter, the son of an affectionate, liberal, Orthodox Zionist father, and his friend, Danny Saunders, whose Hasidic family presents starkly contrasting standards about thought and behavior. As the boys grow in years, they come to grips with learning about fathers and sons, friendship, and religious faith. The play is more about relationships than about politics; more about reconciliation than about religion, and it presents its issues with universal appeal -- speaking to the humans concerns that affect everyone. The Chosen is appropriately topical during an era when our world is desperately in need of compromise and mutual respect among divergent cultures.
