Judy Kaye, Nancy Opel, and More Win 2009 Carbonell Awards

The winners of the 33rd annual Carbonell Awards, honoring the best in South Florida theater, were presented earlier tonight, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

GableStage’s production of the musical, Adding Machine, received seven awards, the most of any single production. It won for Best Production of a Musical, director Joseph Adler, actor Oscar Cheda, actress Maribeth Graham, supporting actor Jim Ballard, supporting actress Stacy Schwartz, and musical director Eric Alsford.

Judy Kaye won for her performance in Sweeney Todd, which also took home the award for Best Production in the Stock/Road Show Award category. Nancy Opel won for Best Supporting Actress for the tour of The Drowsy Chaperone, while Jim Brochu won for Best Actor for his solo play Zero Hour and Julian Gamble won for Best Supporting Actor for the tour of Twelve Angry Men.

William Mastrosimone received the Best New Work Award for his play, Dirty Business, while other highlights included a Best Ensemble award to The Promethean Theatre’s Two Sisters and a Piano, and Mosaic Theatre Company’s The Seafarer, which won for Best Production of a Play, director Richard Jay Simon, actor Gregg Weiner, and scenic designer Sean McClelland.

The event included a special tribute honoring Carbonell Awards co-founder and executive director Jack Zink who passed away last summer. David Arisco also accepted the previously announced George Abbott Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts, awarded for significant contributions to the artistic and cultural development of the region.
