The State Theatre presents Carmen: Opera Verdi Europa. Nothing--not even love--can tame the gypsy Carmen, opera's notoriously
independent femme fatale. Carmen arouses the passions of a jealous Spanish
soldier, Don José, only to lead him to mutiny and desertion. Don José joins
a band of smugglers of which Carmen is a member. He endures this fate as
long as he keeps hold the love of Carmen, but when she abandons him he sinks
into the depths of despair and tragedy is the inevitable outcome. From the
rousing overture and the seductive "Habanera" to the brilliant "Toreador
Song" and the violent finale, Bizet's opulent score captures the color and
drama of this classic tale of love, death, and fate.
