The old adage "You can't take it with you when you die" rings true for the Sycamore family who live life to the fullest. Despite all of the chaos the youngest daughter, Alice, loves them just the same. When Alice meets Tony, who harkens from an uptight, humorless wall-street family, they fall in love and worlds collide. After an unfortunate misunderstood dinner invitation leads to the alienation of Tony's family, Alice breaks it off believing things will never work between them.
