WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

An Original Play by Jesse Putnam
Directed by Jeffrey Woodbridge

In The Masters a reclusive ex-advertising pro is recruited by a restless team of deceased masters (led by Vassily Kandinsky) to be "the one" who will move their "monumental art" forward. He slaves under their demanding tutelage, which requires he not exhibit his work for fear of igniting his ego and corrupting the work. When an attractive gallery owner moves into the apartment upstairs she catches a glimpse of one of his masterful paintings and soon the reluctant apprentice finds himself caught between the obsessive demands of his ghostly masters and his own human craving.
Written and produced with a comedic flare, the play poses philosophical questions about art, modern culture, self-promotion and spiritual development. It was conceived, in part, as an homage to the written work and philosophy of Wassily Kandinsky (sometimes written Vassily). Known to many as a painter, Kandinsky was the author of an enormously influential book titled Concerning the Spiritual in Art. In his book Kandinsky criticizes the increasing materialism of modern art while pointing the way toward a new "monumental art," which he believed would unite all previously independent forms (theatre, poetry, music, painting, etc.). His treatise identifies and dissects the properties and spiritual vibrations of color while lavishing praise on visionary artists such as Maeterlinck, Debussy and Beethoven, among others. Kandinsky's theories are without a doubt some of the most comprehensive and profound to be developed and published by any artist at any time.

"Surely all art is the result of one's having been in danger. Of having gone through an experience all the way to the end, to where no one can go any further." - Vassily Kandinsky
