Synopsis

On the Boards (OtB) presents the long-awaited Seattle debut of Compagnie Marie Chouinard and their latest dance theater work, Orpheus and Eurydice.

This audacious retelling of the famous myth starts with Chouinard and company begin their Orpheus and Eurydice by quickly laying out the story of the poet and his love. From there the group of 12 dancers examines the pivotal moments and emotions of the myth - anguish, bereavement, lust and longing - using tempered text and vocalizations matched with undulating and thrusting dance.

Clad in little more than gold pasties, tiny shorts, boots and fuzzy hats, the dancers writhe across the stage, enacting the roles of Orpheus, Eurydice and a nymph-like Greek chorus in a series of pas de deuxs, solos and ensemble numbers. Original music by Louis Dufort and text sourced from Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben complete the mise-en-scène.
