WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The Tokyo-based theater company Pappa Tarahumara, named after the Tarahumara Indians of Mexico's Copper Canyon, is known for making large scale productions that employ dramatic sets and unconventional costumes in performances that blur the lines of dance, performance art, theater and music. Director Hiroshi Koike's highly sensual dance theater interpretation of Anton Chekhov's Three Sisters provides a fascinating insight into Japanese culture and its fascination with youth culture. While the company has toured frequently to the US with their large scale productions over the past several years, this intimately scaled production is an unusually simple presentation for the company and will be performed in OtB's Studio Theater.
Since its formation in 1982, the company Pappa Tarahumara has offered unique performances under the direction of Hiroshi Koike. Their work is characterized by an Asian sense of time and motion with performers, stage objects, music, lighting, and costume all playing equally important roles in their productions.
Part of the New Performance Series.
