ACT Theatre presents Steve Martin's adaptation of The Underpants, Carl Sternheim's 1910 farce, directed by ACT artistic director Kurt Beattie. In the play, a housewife becomes an overnight celebrity when she accidentally loses her underpants in public, much to the dismay of her conservative bureaucratic husband. When potential boarders start showing up at the door with hopes of renting their spare room, chaos ensues.
Director Kurt Beattie describes Steve Martin as "one of the baby boomers' most original and intellectually alive comedians, [with] a terrific eye for our foibles and confused obsessions," who presents in The Underpants a play "full of raucous, bawdy humor and literate wordplay, [that] keeps a sly satirical eye on the preoccupations and ambitions of a society obsessed with material success and social stature."
This witty comedy that explores ambition, desire, and the fleeting nature of fame while skewering the obsessions and ambitions of the petite bourgeoisie brings together some of Seattle's finest comic talent, including Julie Briskman, Richard Ziman, David Pichette, Matthew Floyd Miller, Marianne Owen and Wesley Rice.
The Underpants is supported, in part, by the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.
