In this Hans Christian Andersen story, a Goblin lives comfortably with a Grocer to whom he has pledged his services.

One day, he sees a poor Poet give up food in exchange for an old book. The incredulous Goblin peeks into the Poet's room and sees the beauty and excitement of poetry, and he is faced with a dilemma. Should he switch his services from the Grocer to the Poet at the risk of living a less comfortable life?
