WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

This witty and acerbic attempt to shatter the genre of "ethnic identity plays" leaves little sacred as it takes on Lee's Korean-American heritage and raises provocative questions about race, culture and identity. Raised in Pullman, WA, Lee has been working in New York since 2002 and has recently been lauded by publications like The New York Times, Village Voice and TimeOut New York as one of the most daring voices of the downtown NYC theater scene today.

Songs of the Dragons... boldly begins with a video of the playwright being repeatedly slapped in the face and is followed by the opening line from a character called Korean-American: "Have you ever noticed how most Asian-Americans are slightly brain-damaged from having grown up with Asian parents?" From there Korean-American navigates the increasingly disturbing levels of a pseudo-Korean world, contending with 3 traditional and stereotypical Korean women and a white couple that threatens to take over the play as they deal with clichéd relationship problems.
