Seattle Repertory Theatre’s planned Seattle to Broadway transfer of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, which was to star Tony Award winner Bill Irwin and be directed by Tony winner Garry Hynes, has been canceled, following the loss of financial support of a commercial partner.

Seattle Rep will replace the production in its regular season with Athol Fugard’s The Road to Mecca, January 15-February 14. The drama depicts a South African artist’s future, and will be directed by Leigh Silverman and star Marya Sea Kaminski.

The theater has also announced that it will debut a brand new piece by NPR humorist Kevin Kling called Breaking Hearts and Taking Names (April 9-May 10), which will replace the previously announced production of Rollick. The work, created with and also featuring singer/accordionist Simone Perrin, will explore the hidden world of love, love gone right, gone wrong and everything in between.

Seattle Rep’s 2008-2009 season also includes The Night Watcher, by Charlayne Woodard (through October 26); The Three Musketeers, by Ken Ludwig (through November 15); Boom, by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb (November 13-December 14); You Can’t Take It With You, by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman (November 28-January 3); Betrayal, by Harold Pinter (February 19-March 22), The Seafarer, by Conor McPherson (February 26-March 28); and Wishful Drinking, by Carrie Fisher (April 2-May 3).
