Dustin Lance Black’s Play 8 to Receive Readings Nationwide

An initial lineup of organizations that will present Dustin Lance Black’s play 8 has been announced. This work, seen in a one-night only reading on Broadway in September and set for its previously announced Los Angeles premiere on March 3, starring George Clooney, is being made available for local presentations by Broadway Impact, which was co-founded by Gavin Creel and Rory O’Malley.

Among the theaters that will be presenting the play are the Intiman Theatre in Seattle, WA; the Uptown Players in Dallas, TX; Plan-B Theatre Company in Salt Lake City, UT; the Williamstown Theatre Festival in Williamstown, MA; Playmakers Repertory in Chapel Hill, NC; and the Iron Crow Theatre in Baltimore, MD. Additional presenting theaters will be announced in the near future.

The play has been crafted from the transcripts of the Proposition 8 trial over same-sex marriage in California. Among the characters in the piece are Theodore B. Olson and David Boies, the lawyers for the two gay couples who sued California over the ban; Charles J. Cooper, the lead defense counsel; Kristin M. Perry and Sandra B. Stier, a lesbian couple who were among the plaintiffs; and the judge, Vaughn R. Walker of the Federal District Court for the Northern District of California.
