Denise Burse to Star in The Amen Corner

Denise Burse will star in James Baldwin’s The Amen Corner, presented by Kenny Leon and True Colors Theatre Company as part of the 2008 National Black Arts Festival at the Woodruff Arts Center on the Alliance Stage, July 16-August 3. Andrea Frye will direct.

The Amen Corner is the story of a pastor in a Harlem storefront church who is determined to hold onto the reins of her congregation. Between rebellious church members, the return of her estranged husband, and her son’s desire to be a jazz musician, Sister Margaret (Burse) tries to balance faith, family, and love to a backdrop of gospel voices.

The cast will also include Thomas Byrd, Tabitha Christopher, Chandra Currelley, Marguerite Hannah, Erik Kilpatrick, Naomi Lavette, Bernadine Mitchell, Margo Moorer, Ronve O’Daniel, and Navaina Rhodes.

Burse has appeared in Leon’s productions of The Piano Lesson and Seven Guitars, and has appeared on television in Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, as well as many daytime soap operas and evening police/courtroom dramas. Her latest project is an independent film, On the One, directed by Charles R. Wright.
