Gypsy, The Sound of Music, and More Set for Atlanta Lyric Theatre’s 2011-2012 Season

Atlanta Lyric Theatre has announced its 2011-2012 season.

The season is set to open with high-spirited musical romp Thoroughly Modern Millie (September 16 – October 2). Based on the popular movie, the stage version of the play includes a full score of new songs and bright dance numbers. It will be followed by The Sound of Music (December 2 – 18), the final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein which tells of a family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II.

2012 will kick off with Ain’t Misbehavin’ (February 17 – March 4), a Tony Award-winning celebration of the music of Thomas “Fats” Waller. Next will be the romantic musical composed by Adam Guettel, The Light in the Piazza (April 20 – May 6), which celebrates the beauty and passions of the human heart. Stephen Sondheim’s Gypsy will close the season with songs that have become popular standards, including “Small World,” Everything’s Coming up Roses, “Some People,” and “Let Me Entertain You.”

Atlanta Lyric Theatre is Atlanta’s only local professional musical theater company and recently relocated to the historic and newly renovated Strand Theatre located on the Square in Marietta, Georgia.
