WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

A gothic musical set in the brutal environs of 1765 London, Sweeney Todd tells the story of the infamous "demon barber of Fleet Street" and his meat pie-making assistant, whose business thrives as their customers disappear. Universally acclaimed upon its Broadway debut in 2005, Director John Doyle's spare, macabre and thrilling re-imagining features a cast of ten actors who also serve as the show's orchestra, playing their own instruments onstage.

The show was nominated for best revival of a musical at the 2006 Tony Awards and won Doyle a Tony Award for best director of a musical and won Sarah Travis a Tony Award for best orchestrations. The production also won the Drama League, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for best revival of a musical and was awarded a special citation by the New York Drama Critics Circle.

"One helluva show [that] burrows into your thoughts with the poisoned seductiveness of a campfire storyteller who knows what really scares you."
-- Ben Brantley, The New York Times

Doyle gives a twist to this notorious musical thriller, about a devilish barber who exacts a sort of revenge for his wrongful imprisonment by slicing and dicing unsuspecting clients, by having the show's cast double as the production's orchestra. The actors are rarely without their instruments on stage, sometimes playing, singing, and acting all at once. Alt[...]
