WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The words of Bernard Malamud will explode into vivid theatrical life when TJT brings his two most
celebrated stories to the stage in the "Word for Word" style. The Magic Barrel centers on a hapless rabbinical student's encounter with a mysterious, herring-eating matchmaker. In The Jew Bird, Malamud's darkly hilarious fable of assimilation and identity, a Yiddish-accented crow seeks asylum from "Anti-Semeets" in the Bronx apartment of a middle-class Jewish family of the 1950s. Reprising their roles from TJT's 27th season production, Family Alchemy, the production features Jeri Lynn Cohen and Corey Fischer. The stories will be directed by "Word-for-Word" members Sheila Balter and Joel Mullennix. The Jew Bird was originally seen on the TJT stage in 2000 as a co-production with "Word for Word" (a program of The Z Space Studio). The Magic Barrel appeared in 2005 as part of Family Alchemy. 2 X MALAMUD: The Jew Bird and The Magic Barrel was presented last summer to full houses and great reviews at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts. This production is presented by the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco in celebration of TJT's 30th Anniversary, and will be held at the JCC's Kanbar Hall.
