The Museum of Performance & Design has announced the cancellation of Carol Channing & Friends in Concert, which was previously announced for September 25, at the Herbst Theatre, to celebrate the opening of The Museum of Performance & Design's Hello Carol! A Celebration of Carol Channing. Channing has suffered fractures to her femur and hip sustained from a slip at her Modesto home, necessitating the event's cancellation.
The exhibit, however, is still scheduled to run September 26-March 14, 2009. It is the first major retrospective on the life and work of the Broadway and Hollywood legend, and will include original costumes ranging from the original 1964 Hello, Dolly! dress to one-of-a-kind outfits created by Bob Mackie, rare photographs, video and audio clips, original drawings by Al Hirschfeld, her Tony and Golden Globe Awards, and other items.
Channing won the Tony Award for Hello, Dolly! and also appeared on Broadway in The Vamp, Lend an Ear, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She received an Oscar nomination for Thoroughly Modern Millie.
The Museum will still present its benefit evening Song & Dance: A Celebration of Carol Channing on Friday, September 26 at the Fairmont Hotel. Mistress of Ceremonies JoAnne Worley will be joined by Carole Cook, Chita Rivera, Valarie Pettiford, Alice Playten, and musicians from the California Pops Orchestra under musical director Kim Venaas.
