TheatreWorks opens its 38th season with an astonishing revival of Bernard Pomerance's Obie and Tony Award-winning drama The Elephant Man. First presented at TheatreWorks in 1985 in a landmark production that earned the company numerous critical accolades, The Elephant Man is a stunningly poetic drama that calls into question the true meaning of beauty, touching the very heart of the human struggle to find and maintain dignity. This moving play chronicles the life of John Merrick, the deformed 19th century sideshow attraction who became an urbane and witty favorite of Victorian society. Portrayed without makeup, the title character is one of the epic creations of contemporary theatre.
