WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Set in early 1920s rural Georgia, Levee James is both a powerful love story and a riveting exploration of just how far individuals will go to hold onto their personal dreams in a world of unrelenting oppression. Lily (Lil) Hoterfield returns home to Senoia, Georgia, after years of working as a ladies' maid in Atlanta, to visit her deceased sister's husband, Wesley (Wes) Slaton, and his two daughters on their prosperous farm. Igniting an old passion, Lil and Wes find comfort and joy in their rediscovered connection, yet must quickly face the harsh realities of an unjust world that threatens their love and their survival. After witnessing racially motivated violence against their good friend Fitzhugh Marvin, and fearing for their own lives at a time when random cruelty against blacks and lynchings were commonplace, together Wes and Lil must make the painful choice whether to stay and defend their right to call Wes's farm home, or flee the treacherous South as so many blacks before them had done.
