Brooks Ashmanskas, Mary Birdsong, Stephen DeRosa, and Gregory Wallace will star in the American Conservatory Theater’s production of John Guare’s 1976 play Rich and Famous, to run January 8-February 8. The show, which opens officially on January 14, will be directed by Tony Award winner John Rando.

The play, which has been rewritten by the author, focuses on playwright Bing Ringling, who is hoping his latest outing will be his lucky break, but slips into a nightmarish phantasmagoria that shows him just how wrong things can go.

The creative team includes Scott Bradley (sets), Gregory Gale (costumes), Alexander Nichols (lighting), Jeremy Lee (sound), and Laura Burton (musical direction). Rando’s many directorial credits include Urinetown, The Wedding Singer, Damn Yankees, and On the Town.

Guare’s other works include House of Blue Leaves, Six Degrees of Separation, Landscape of the Body, Bosoms and Neglect and the librettos for the musicals Sweet Smell of Success and Two Gentlemen of Verona.

As previously announced, the theater will present A Conversation with John Guare on December 13, moderated by A.C.T. Dramaturg Michael Paller.
