Cutting Ball Theater Announces 2012-2013 Season

The Cutting Ball Theater has announced the lineup for its 2012-2013 season.

The season will open with Strindberg Cycle: The Chamber Plays in Rep (October 12-November 18), featuring repertory performances of August Strindberg’s The Ghost Sonata, The Pelican, The Black Glove, Storm, and Burned House in new translations by Paul Walsh and directed by Cutting Ball artistic director Rob Melrose.

In the new year, Cutting Ball will present Risk is This.The Cutting Ball New Experimental Plays Festival (January 11-February 9), a festival solely dedicated to experimental works for the stage. The festival’s productions and staged readings will include Superheroes, written and directed by Sean San Jose; a new translation by Rob Melrose of Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi, directed by Yuri Urnov; Basil Kreimendahl’s Sidewinders; Dipika Guha’s Passing; and Josef and Karl Capek’s Insect Play in a new translation by Bennett Fisher.

The season will continue with a new translation by Rob Melrose of Eugene Ionesco’s The Chairs (March 1-31), a tragic farce directed by Annie Elias. Then, Rob Melrose will direct the world premiere of Andrew Saito’s Krispy Kritters in the Scarlett Night (May 17-June 16), a play about love and longing in the neglected neighborhoods of a fictional city.

The Hidden Classics Reading Series will also celebrate the work of August Strindberg. Plays set for the series include Strindberg’s The Father (August 19), Vaclav Havel’s The Increased Difficulty of Concentration (December 9), Sophocles’ Electra (January 27), Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor (March 24), and one play still to be announced on June 9.
