Berkeley Repertory Theatre has announced that KJ Sanchez's X's and O's (A Gridiron Love Story) will complete the 2014-2015 subscription programming. Artistic Director Tony Taccone will direct the play, which is set to begin previews on Berkeley Rep's Thrust Stage on January 16 and run through March 1, with an opening night planned for January 23.
In X's and O's, Sanchez, working with collaborator Jenny Mercein, has created a docudrama based on interviews with football players, their families, and their fans. Interviewees discussed traumatic brain injuries and their effect on the game.
"We're delighted to add KJ Sanchez's X's and O's (A Gridiron Love Story) to the 47th season," said Taccone in a statement. "She is an amazing theatre-maker and documentarian who came to us with an idea to explore head trauma in football."
KJ Sanchez's work has appeared at Actors Theatre of Louisville, Two River Theater, and off-Broadway at Urban Stages. Her previous play ReEntry, portrays Marines preparing for and returning from combat.
