Mike McShane, a comic best known for his work on Whose Line is it Anyway?, has joined the cast of Berkeley Repertory Theatre’s production of Amy Freed’s You, Nero, to run May 15-June 28, with an opening set for May 20. Sharon Ott will direct. McShane replaces the previously announced Charles Dean as Burrus; Dean withdrew from the production for health reasons.

This world premiere comedy is produced in association with South Coast Repertory, where it debuted in January with a slightly different cast. The play is Freed’s imagined backstory of the fall of Nero, consumed by the need to turn public opinion in his favor with the help of the playwright Scribonius.

As previously announced, the cast stars Danny Scheie as Nero and Broadway veteran Jeff McCarthy as Scribonius. The cast will also feature Richard Doyle, Lori Larsen, Donnell Hill, Kasey Mahaffy, Maggie Mason, and Sarah Moser. The creative team will include Erik Flatmo (scenic design), Paloma H. Young (costume design), Peter Maradudin (lighting design), and Stephen LeGrand and Eric Drew Feldman (original music and sound design).
