Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, Disney’s Mulan JR. Set for Berkeley Playhouse 2012-2013 Season

Berkeley Playhouse has announced the productions set for its 2012-2013 season of family-friendly musicals.

The season will open with the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic about the novice nun Maria who becomes governess to the seven troublesome children of widowed naval Captain Von Trapp The Sound of Music (October 27-December 2). Jennifer King will direct, with musical direction by Angela Zullinger. Next, Jon Tracy will direct Frank Loesser and Abe Burrows’ Guys and Dolls (March 23-April 28), which follows the odd love story of gambler Nathan Detroit and Salvation Army girl Sarah Brown. Then, Berkeley Playhouse will present the West Coast professional premiere of Disney’s Mulan JR. (July 13-August 25), a stage adaptation of the hit feature film, directed by Elizabeth McKoy.

The season’s New Work Showcase production will be Thumbelina (May 10-12), a commission by Jon Tracy and Phil Gorman which tells the story of a girl as small as a human thumb. The season’s Youth Conservatory production, which gives young people the opportunity to take part in full-scale youth-only productions, will be Peter Pan Jr. (January 19-27).
