This world premiere comedy is produced in association with South Coast Repertory, where it debuted in January with a slightly different cast. The play is Freed's imagined backstory of the fall of Nero, consumed by the need to turn public opinion in his favor with the help of the playwright Scribonius.
Danny Scheie reprises his role of Nero from SCR's production, and is joined at Berkeley Rep by Broadway veteran Jeff McCarthy as Scribonius. The cast will also include Charles Dean (Burrus), Richard Doyle (Seneca), Lori Larsen (Agrippina), Kasey Mahaffy (Fabiolo), Susannah Schulman (Poppaea), and ensemble members Donnie Hill, Maggie Mason, and Sarah Moser.
The creative team will include Erik Flatmo (scenic design), Paloma H. Young (costume design), Peter Maradudin (lighting design), and Stephen LeGrand and Eric Drew Feldman (original music and sound design). For more information, visit berkeleyrep.org.
