Magic Theatre Surpasses Fundraising Goal

The Magic Theatre has announced that it has surpassed its emergency fundraising goal. The theater previously stated that it needed to raise $350,000 by January 12 to continue its season; it has thus far received contributions of nearly $355,000, with an additional $100,000 being raised by a matching grant, to total over $450,000.

Missy Kirchner, chairman of the Magic’s board of directors, said in a statement, “We’ve received more than 1,100 contributions from 23 states, ranging from $5.00 to $20,000. We furloughed staff because we weren’t certain we could pay them. But they came in as volunteers and developed a creative fundraising appeal that relied on rallying personal and professional contacts and Facebook communities, along with a video celebrating Magic’s 42-year history.”

The Magic’s 2009 season will begin with the world premiere of Oni Faida Lampley’s Tough Titty (January 24-February 22), and will continue with Lloyd Suh’s American Hwangap (February 28-March 29), Theresa Rebeck’s Mauritius (April 18-May 17), and Craig Wright’s Mistakes Were Made (May 23-June 21).
