(© Leslie Fennell) | Broadway legend Carol Channing has been honored for her work in arts education, both by the California state legislature and by the National PTA, which gave the actress their Life Achievement Award on Monday, June 23, at the PTA National Convention in San Diego.
Channing and her husband, Harry Kullijian, have set up the Dr. Carol Channing and Harry Kullijian Foundation for the Arts, which uses scholarships, lectures, and performances to engage the public about the importance of arts in education.
Past recipients of the PTA's Life Achievement Award have including Mamie Eisenhower, Rosalynn Carter, Nancy Reagan, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Bill Cosby, and California governor Arnold Schwarzengger.
Channing won the Tony Award for Hello, Dolly! and also appeared on Broadway in The Vamp, Lend an Ear, and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She received an Oscar nomination for Thoroughly Modern Millie.
