Full casting has been announced for the LaJolla Playhouse production of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s The Nightingale, to run July 10-August 5 under the direction of Moisés Kaufman.

The musical, which is loosely based on the Hans Christian Anderson tale, tells the story of a young emperor in ancient China whose constricted life is upended by the song of a bird that lives just beyond his reach.

Bobby Steggert leads the cast as the Young Emperor, with Nikki Castillo as the Nightingale, Eisa Davis as Fisherwoman, Matthew Patrick Davis as Lieutenant Eunuch, Kimiko Glenn as Princess Ssu-Ming, Steve Gunderson as Chief Eunuch, Jonathan Hammond as the Emperor, Corbin Reid as Feiyan, Aaron Serotsky as Minister of State, and Charlayne Woodard as the Empress Dowager. The ensemble includes Chelsea Diggs-Smith and Zach Martens.

Dan Knechtges will choreograph the production, which features Lon Hoyt as musical director, scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by David Lander, sound design by Cricket S. Myers, puppet design by Chris Green, and dramaturgy by Gabriel Greene.
