The Old Globe Theatre, in San Diego, California, has announced selections for its 2009-2010 winter season, which will kick off with the world premiere musical Sammy (September 17-November 1), featuring book, music and lyrics by two-time Academy Award and Grammy Award-winner Leslie Bricusse. Keith Glover will direct this musical about Sammy Davis, Jr. The show will feature hits like “The Candy Man,” “Mr. Bojangles” and “What Kind of Fool Am I,” as well as new songs written just for this musical.

Next up will be the world premiere musical Whisper House (January 13-February 21), featuring music by 2007 Tony and Grammy Award-winner Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening), with book and lyrics by Kyle Jarrow. Keith Powell will direct this musical, set in a haunted lighthouse during the height of World War II. The young nephew of the lightkeeper is the only one that can hear these mischievous spirits, forcing him to grow up quickly and make decisions that are usually left up to grownups.

The Old Globe will present the West Coast premiere of Boeing-Boeing (March 13-April 18), by Marc Camoletti and Beverly Cross, which was revised for its recent Tony-winning Broadway incarnation. The farce concerns a successful architect in Paris juggling three flight attendant fiancées. The Old Globe season will close with Olivier and Tony Award-winner Roger Rees’ tour-de-force performance about all things Shakespeare, What You Will (May 1-June 22).

The Old Globe’s arena stage series will start things off with the West Coast premiere of The Savannah Disputation (September 26-November 1), by Evan Smith, to be directed by Kim Rubinstein. This will be the final production for the Globe at the James S. Copley Auditorium. The inaugural production in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre is Neil Simon’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Lost in Yonkers (January 23- February 28), to be directed by Kent Paul. Also in the new White Theatre is Kenny Finkle’s romantic comedy, Alive and Well (March 20-April 25), a co-world premiere with Virginia Stage Company. Finally, the White Theatre will house the West Coast premiere of the drama The Whipping Man (May 8-June 13), by Matthew Lopez.
