San Diego Repertory has announced the selections for its 2008-2009 season, which will begin with Eve Ensler’s The Good Body (September 6-28). The piece is a follow-up to the author’s Vagina Monologues; Ensler traveled to more than 40 countries to discuss the concept of self-image and interview women about how they really felt about their bodies. The Rep’s production will be directed by Delicia Turner Sonnenberg and star Karole Foreman, Deanna Driscoll, and Linda Libby.

Next up will be author Richard Montoya and actor Herbert Siguenza of Culture Clash in Water and Power (October 21-November 16), a penetrating look at Southern California’s power politics and the Latinos and Gringos who hold our future in their hands. Sam Woodhouse will direct. The piece premiered in 2006 at LA’s Mark Taper Forum, winning the Los Angeles Theatre Critic’s Circle and Ovation Awards for Best New Play.

The musical The Princess and The Black-Eyed Pea, featuring book and lyrics by Karole Foreman, with music and lyrics by Andy Chukerman, will play November 23-December 21. Set in the heart of two exotic African kingdoms, the show transforms Hans Christian Andersen’s cherished fairy tale into a soulful musical comedy. Stafford Arima will direct, with choreography by Todd Underwood.

The Pulitzer Prize winning play, Doubt: A Parable, will follow, January 10-February 8. In John Patrick Shanley’s drama, a nun suspects a priest of an inappropriate relationship with a student. Todd Salovey will direct local favorites Rosina Reynolds and Monique Gaffney.

The season will conclude with Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera (February 28-March 29). A radical re-imagining of The Beggars Opera, this unforgettable cultural masterpiece revolutionized traditional old-fashioned opera.
