WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The 2006-2007 Season closes with Tobacco Road by Jack Kirkland, from the Southern classic by Erskine Caldwell. What happens when the American Dream goes terribly wrong? The second longest running play in the history of Broadway was a seven and a half year cultural phenomenon. Based on the controversial novel, Tobacco Road tells the story of Jeeter Lester, a dirt poor farmer who dreams of planting a garden beside his ramshackle home, but is too lazy and broke to do anything except scheme ways to get out of work. His wife just wants something to eat. Their troubled son wants a car, so he marries a ravenous female evangelist who promises to buy him one -- with disastrous results. And the rest of the family? Don't ask. Twisted, hilarious, and sometimes disturbing, Tobacco Road paints a fascinating, funny, and gripping family portrait.
