Christopher Gattelli, Mary Martello, Ian Merrill Peakes, et al. Among 2009 Barrymore Award Winners

Winners of the 2009 Barrymore Awards, which honor the best in Philadelphia-area theater, have been announced.

The Arden Theatre Company’s production of Something Intangible led the winners with seven awards, including Outstanding Overall Production of a Play; Outstanding Direction of a Play (Terrence J. Nolen); Outstanding Leading Actor in a Play (Ian Merrill Peakes); Outstanding Set Design (James Kronzer); Outstanding Lighting Design (F. Mitchell Dana); Outstanding Costume Design (Rosemarie E. McKelvey); and Outstanding New Play (Bruce Graham).

The People’s Light & Theatre Company’s production of Cinderella received four awards for Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical; Outstanding Direction of a Musical (Pete Pryor); Outstanding Original Music (Michael Ogborn); and Outstanding Ensemble in a Musical.

Other notable winners include Christopher Gattelli, who won for his choreography of Altar Boyz at Bristol Riverside Theatre, the ensemble cast of The Wilma Theater’s Scorched, and individual actors Kate Eastwood Norris (Rock ‘n’ Roll), Michael Philip O’Brien (Avenue X), Jennie Eisenhower (Forbidden Broadway’s Greatest Hits), Jared McLenigan (It’s a Wonderful Life! A Live Radio Play), Janis Dardaris (Scorched), Forrest McClendon (Avenue X), and Mary Martello (Candide).

Special awards were also given out to Charlotte Cloe Fox Wind, who received the F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist; Lantern Theater Company, which received the Excellence in Theatre Education and Community Service for its Classroom Connections program; Dugald MacArthur, who received the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award; and Delaware Theatre Company & The Ferris School for Boys, which received the Ted and Stevie Wolf New Approaches to Collaborations Award, for its production of No Child…
