People’s Light & Theatre’s Cinderella, Arden’s Something Intangible Lead Barrymore Nominations

People’s Light & Theatre Company’s production of Cinderella and The Arden Theatre Company’s Something Intangible lead the nominations for the 2009 Barrymore Awards. The awards, which
honor the best in Philadelphia-area theater, will be presented at a ceremony at the Walnut Street Theatre, on October 5.

The production of Cinderella is a holiday panto, with writers Kathryn Petersen and Michael Ogborn, director Pete Pryor, and lead actress Kim Carson all receiving nominations, and the show itself being nominated for outstanding new musical. Playwright Bruce Graham was nominated for Best Play for Something Intangible, based loosely on the story of the Disney brothers, with other nominations going to director Terrence J. Nolen, and leading actors Ian Merrill Peakes, Scott Greer, Walter Charles, and Sally Mercer.

Walnut Street Theatre’s production of The Producers received nods for musical production, director Marc Robin, actor Ben Dibble, and ensemble. The Wilma’s production of Wajdi Mouawad’s drama Scorched was nominated for best play production, director Blanka Zizka, and its ensemble. In addition, Kala Moses Baxter, Troy Herion, Sarah Sanford, Nicholas Wardigo, and Charlotte Cloe Fox Wind recieved nominations for the F. Otto Haas Award for an Emerging Philadelphia Theatre Artist, which comes with a $10,000 cash prize for the recipient and $1,000 for each finalist.

A special recognition award will be presented to Society Hill Playhouse founders Deen Kogan and posthumously to her husband, Jay. The Brown Martin Philadelphia Award, recognizing plays that touch on cultural values, will go to the Arden’s production of My Name Is Asher Lev and Interact’s Little Lamb.
