The Wilma Theater has announced its 2011-2012 season, which will begin with the U.S. premiere of Our Class (October 12-November 13) by Polish playwright Tadeusz Slobodzianek, in an English version by Ryan Craig, directed by Blanka Zizka. It tells the stories of ten classmates – five Jewish and five Catholic — in 1925 Poland, and is based on true events in the Polish town of Jedwabne.

Next up will be the Philadelphia premiere of Annie Baker’s Body Awareness (January 4-February 5), directed by Anne Kauffman. In it, a visiting artist specializing in photographs of nude women stirs up conflicted feelings over sexuality and identity for a lesbian college professor.

Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class (March 7-April 8) will be directed by Richard Hamburger. The play chronicles the lives of the Tate family during the changing tides of the 1970s American West. Financially ruined, their farm is in chaos and the debt collectors are getting increasingly ruthless.

The Wilma will close its season with Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches (May 23-June 24), directed by Blanka Zizka. Set in 1985, the epic work intertwines the lives of a politically powerful right-wing lawyer; his protégé; and an abandoned yet spirited gay man, as well as those closest to them.
