Having served as assistant director for the original 1995 Broadway production (which won the Tony Award for Best Play), Civic Theatre of Allentown's Artistic Director, William Sanders, brings Terrence McNally's Love! Valour! Compassion! to Lehigh Valley.

In the play, eight men hash out their passions, resentments and fears over the course of three summer weekends spent at a beautiful country estate. Comprised of current and former lovers and friends, the group grapples with their emotions for each other and with the AIDS crisis that was reaching its height at the time, when an HIV diagnosis was a death sentence.

"It's an emotionally complicated play," Sanders says. "It's hilarious, but it's tragic, too. All of the humor and warmth the characters experience is undercut by the cruelty of this epidemic - and often by their own cruelty. You end up feeling hopeful and heartbroken all at once."
