Matthew Hydzik, Emily Padgett, and Rachelle Rak to Star in Flashdance National Tour

Broadway veterans Emily Padgett, Matthew Hydzik, and Rachelle Rak will lead the upcoming world premiere national tour of Flashdance – The Musical, which kicks off January 1, 2013 at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

As previously reported, Sergio Trujillo directs and choreographs the production, which is aiming to hit Broadway for an open-ended engagement beginning in August, 2013.

Based on the 1983 film of the same name, the musical features a book by Robert Cary and Tom Hedley (the latter of whom co-wrote the film with Joe Eszterhas), and a score by Robbie Roth and Robert Cary that features 16 new songs. The musical will also include the film’s hit tunes, which include “Maniac” and the title song.

Padgett, who will play Alex, was most recently seen on Broadway in Rock of Ages. Hydzik, who will play the role of Nick, was last seen on Broadway as Tony in the revival of West Side Story. Rak, who will play Tess, recently played Sheila in A Chorus Line at the Paper Mill Playhouse, and her many stage credits include Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Catch Me If You Can, Fosse, Thou Shalt Not, and Chicago.

The creative team will include Klara Zieglerova (scenic design), Paul Tazewell (costume design), Howell Binkley (lighting design), Peter Nigrini (projection design), John Shivers (sound design), Jason Howland (arrangements and supervision), Doug Besterman (orchestrations), and Jim Abbott (dance arrangements).
