The Cradle Will Rock is one of the most extraordinary stories in the history of American theatre. This dynamic musical, a comic morality tale, follows the citizens of Steeltown, USA--Reverend Salvation, Editor Daily, Dr. Specialist, Harry Druggist, and others--as they corrupt themselves under the control of Mr. Mister, the powerful steel magnate.
Composer Mark Blitzstein described it as "a labor opera composed in a style that falls somewhere between realism, romance, vaudeville, comic strip, Gilbert and Sullivan, Brecht, and agit-prop"
It was the first American musical written from a working class perspective and it laid the groundwork, in its politics and its construction, for later shows as varied as Cabaret, Hair, Pippin, Chicago, Assassins, and Rent.
The Cradle Will Rock is directed by Mad Cow Theatre Artistic Director Alan Bruun with musical direction by Robin Jensen.
