Valentine and Proteus have always been like brothers until Proteus follows Valentine to Milan and catches sight of his friend's lady, Silvia. Gone is their friendship and forgotten is the faithful Julia, who was Proteus' intended. Proteus must have Silvia, even though she doesn't care for him. Shakespeare's early comedy about heedless, headstrong young love is an adventure with surprising twists.
