American history blazes to vivid life in this unconventional of Broadway hits. With quick-witted dialogue and a playful score, 1776 dramatizes the struggle to declare independence. John Adams teams up with Benjamin Franklin, Richard Henry Lee, and Thomas Jefferson in an award-winning musical showcasing the principles, pride and determination that influenced the birth of our nation. Winner of 3 Tony Awards including Best Musical.
Set during a time when the country is divided by conflicting ideologies and convictions following a contentious presidential election, Vogel's sweeping, music-rich story plays out one frigid Christmas Eve on the banks of the Potomac River. Amid the hubbub of holiday preparations, an array of abolitionists and assassins, slaves and freemen, Union and Confederate soldiers, along with President Lincoln and Mary Todd, all pursue their paths to liberation. Propelled by traditional American songs, marches and spirituals — all revitalized for this production by luminary Portland musicians — A Civil War Christmas is a lively reminder for people of all beliefs about humanity's potential for compassion, reconciliation and hope.
A gypsy prophecy pulls melancholy sandwich-maker Harold and two bewitching sisters through a star-crossed journey of love and connection. Featuring a catchy score and inventive story-telling, this darkly comic rock fable culminates during the northeast blackout of 1965. "The most paradoxical of musicals – hilarious and bittersweet, deeply immersed in tradition but utterly original" (Dallas News), Fly By Night is a tale of finding light in a world filled with darkness.
Based on the Gospel according to Matthew, Godspell is a groundbreaking and unique reflection on the life of Jesus, with a message of kindness, tolerance and love. The parables of the Bible come to life with a parade of beloved songs including "Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord," "Learn Your Lessons Well," "All For The Best," "All Good Gifts," "Turn Back, O Man" and "By My Side."
The Impossible Dream," one of the great songs of the American musical theatre, will lift the hearts of audiences with its message of courage and the search for truth as Lakewood Theatre Company concludes its 63rd season.
Dorothy, the Scarecrow, a witch named Evillene and that charismatic huckster the Wiz will light up the stage in this uproarious, song-filled adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, told through the lens of the African-American experience. With its arch social commentary, journey of self-discovery and infectious songs like "Ease On Down the Road," The Wiz won seven Tony Awards and had a triumphant four-year run on Broadway. OSF is thrilled to bring this cultural touchstone of the 1970s to our outdoor Allen Elizabethan Theatre.
How do you save a good man who's wrongly accused and facing the ax in 24 hours? That's how high the stakes are in Gilbert and Sullivan's funny, pun-filled musical that mines a richer emotional world than the duo's other comic operettas. Bristling with bad cases of unrequited love, a prison break and plots running amok, this world-premiere adaptation inspired by classic country-and-western music makes for a rousing musical event the whole family will enjoy.
The Yeomen of the Guard is an immersive 80-minute performance. Throughout the show, audience members in the Promenade section will be onstage among the actors, occasionally using scenic elements as temporary seating. Traditional fixed-seat ticket holders may also be invited to join the fun onstage. Any shopping bags, backpacks, bulky purses, and heavy coats will need to be stored with the house staff during the performance.
