Wayward Souls is a road trip through the South Louisiana youth of Brooke Hoover, an only child with two Non-Traditional parents and whose only constant company was stuffed and living animals. Brooke tells tales about her parents who, having hearts of gold (and perhaps hoping to expose Brooke to actual people), opened their home to anyone and everyone and the many Wayward Souls who stepped through the door and into their lives. Each unique encounter is a stop on Brooke's journey that begins with the assumption that her life is far from unique and winds up at the understanding that everyone has their own Wayward Souls who help them get from where they start off to where they're going to.
