WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
A multimedia performance based on Clifford Odets's Depression-era drama Awake and Sing…and zombies. Part of the IRT 3b Residency
Wake...Sing... is a meditation on "wokeness" and "wakefulness," exploring the tension between middle-class aspirations and utopian vision using theater, music video, and dance.
Wake...Sing... is based on Clifford Odets's Depression-era drama about the family of second-generation Jewish immigrants living in the Bronx, waking up from the American dream as economic conditions worsen. The title of Odets's play is taken from the biblical book of Isaiah, which prophesies resurrection of the dead at the beginning of the messianic era, metaphorical of personal, collective, and spiritual renewal. Wake...Sing... explores the themes of Odets's play and Isaiah alongside contemporary zombie films in which people negotiate power, political and otherwise, in the postapocalyptic vacuum of governments, military, and police order.
