WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
Double Helix Theatre Company presents Trojan Women: A Love Story, written by Obie Award winning playwright Charles Mee. The play depicts the struggle of the women of Troy in the wake of the Greek conquest. The story is told in traditional Mee style, through a blend of poetic lyricism and bold modern language, using text from Euripides and Berlioz. The question of what will be the women's fate at the hands of their captors - will they be killed, made concubines, wives or slaves - is explored within a startling, modern context. The play is a timely investigation of the dehumanizing effects of war on individuals and their cultures. The production is directed by Drama League Directing Fellow, Ellen Beckerman.
A special matinee will be held on Sunday, June 1 at 2 PM followed by a panel discussion with the playwright, director and representatives from MADRE and Amnesty International. There is no 5pm performance on that day. Tickets are $30 with 50% of the box office going to support MADRE's work with refugees.
The Opening Night Gala Benefit includes pre-show wine and cheese reception.

Few people have ever described Euripides' play about the aftermath of the Trojan War as a love story. Scholar Paul Roche called it a "nightmare lamentation" written "in a state of despair." Greek wars may be epic and romanticized things to modern audiences, but they were horrifyingly real to the soldiers who fought them.
According to mythology, Meneleus started the entire Trojan War over Helen of Troy. With Trojan Women: A Love Story, Charles Mee adds the tragedy of Dido and Aeneus to the mix.
