WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

The Subjective Theatre Company presents The White Plague as part of The UnConvention: An American Theater Festival. Written by Karel Capek, and translated by Peter Majer and Cathy Porter.

Capek's play was written in 1936, two years before Nazi Germany invaded Czechoslovakia. It follows young Dr. Galen as he finds a cure for the white plague, and decides to release his formula only after the country's Dictator declares peace. A savage and anguisehd satire against Fascist Dictatorship and the Virus of inhumanity.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?

The White Plague, Karel Capek's 1937 satire of war-mongering nations, remains as relevant today as when the Czech playwright originally wrote it as a reaction to Spain's civil war. The Subjective Theatre Company presents this rarely seen work as part of The UnConvention: An American Theater Festival, a response to the Republican National Convention in New York City. Unfortunately, director Zachary R. Mannheimer's production, which uses a 1999 translation by Peter Majer and Cathy Porter, is wildly uneven.

In the play, a leprosy-inducing plague afflicts an unnamed country even as the nation prepares for war. Dr. Galen (Andy Waldschmidt) has found a cure, but refuses to make it widely availab[...]
