WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Theater for the New City celebrates Kwanzaa with The Vengeance of Mami Wata, written, choreographed and directed by Rose-Marie Guiraud. Mami Wata is a well-known figure in all of African oral tradition. In certain regions of Africa, for example, Nigeria, Mami Wata is adored by some as the spiritual mother of the water. This story of Mami Wata is the tale of an outcast little girl who was so persecuted as a child because her mother died while giving birth to her that she became ill. She was then driven from her village to survive on her own in the bush. She finally died from lack of nourishment, but 20 years later, she came back as a ghost in the form of a beautiful woman to take revenge on those who persecuted her. Presented by the Les Guirivoires Dance Company. Running Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes No intermission
