WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The Sun Shall Rise is a 1930s classic by China's premiere playwright, Cao Yu. Originally written by Cao Yu in 1935, the play is at once a compassionate and cynical look by the young playwright at the vulnerabilities of humanity, regardless of class and stations in life. It is set in the Shanghai Hotel, a grandiose structure which comes alive only at night with gambling, drinking, gossip, suspicion, and heartache while the rest of the city is fast asleep. The play contains several inter-woven storylines that show the struggles of women, servants, secretaries, and banking ministers, all of whom are of various ages and strata of wealth. For this new adaptation, the script has been condensed from four acts to three. Appropriate for teenage audiences and above.
