It's an average summer day in the life of four best friends, deep in the heart of the seventies. School is out and the action takes place poolside, under the hot Long Island sun. Everything starts out normal: Monique's only concerns are a tan and a Tab; her boyfriend Casey's, scoring 'ludes and girls. Eve dreams of splitting suburbia; Art, of becoming a shaman, just like his idol, the Sonoran Indian, Don Juan. The only thing left that these life-long friends still have in common is drugs. But even that is about to change. As the story opens, the foursome discovers that they've stopped making Quaalades - a revelation that sets the day's events in motion. Everybody is left to fend for themselves to fill the void. Their day culminates in a mind-bending Midsummer Night's Dream interlude that shakes up everything they know, and from which they wake up irrevocably changed. In keeping with AUR (Another Urban Riff Productions)'s claim to be the pre-eminent authority on smashing 4th walls, The Summer They Stopped Making 'Ludes offers a unique, trippy format - It's like a Hallmark presentation on acid. Shots of tequilla are distributed at intermission.
