In her eighth appearance in as many years at the Cunningham studios, artistic director, Ellen Stokes Shadle, presents her company, ellen stokes shadle/DanceWorks. Returning from last season are, "Via" (2005), an animated and sassy quartet to J.S. Bach, that builds through four sections to a final all-out sprint to the finish; and "Above the Din . . . Saved by the Crucible" (2005), a provocative, poignant, and witty solo remarking on clinical perceptions of normalcy, performed to text by Susanna Kaysen. Repertory pieces being presented include "Volition" (2003), a driving ensemble piece that premiered at the 2002 Elan awards honoring Rob Marshall, inspired by the unrelenting rhythm, intensity, and grit of New York City living using music by Lamb; and an excerpt from the evening-length work, "Here on Earth" (1999), exploring sin/virtue and their relationship to our design of Self. New pieces include, "Fireflies' Night Out", created during a residency at Greenwich Academy, a cheeky and compelling frolic, inspired by city nightlife to the music of Philip Glass as re-mixed by Kate Simko and the premiere of, "Same Difference", to the lush and vivid music of Dave Matthews Band.
