Lucy, a mutant, friendless whale, washes up on a garbage-strewn beach in Babylon, Long Island intent on killing herself. As she waits to die, perfuming her surroundings with the stink of desperation, strange, magnetic forces that have been ripped with her from the sea work their way into the lives of two people in the process of clawing away at themselves. The two wretches escalate their internal fights with themselves: they peak, they panic, and then...? Perhaps Lucy is not so alone after all. "The Loneliest Whale in the World" is a play about gnawing at oneself and whether it is better to be swallowed up by that shameful, morbid pleasure, or whether we must finally give in to all the talking heads that tell us not to.
