RE:Gorgeous! Hysterical! Tragic!
What puny adjectives to describe Le Wilhelm?s production of ?The House of Bernarda Alba.? Every single performance in this piece is so honest and wonderful that it?s difficult for me to point out any particular performance. But point out I must. I thought I was going to soil myself with Nancy Elton?s performance ? so funny and bold while remaining grounded. Mel Squires was a scream ? just cracked me up with her honest and funny portrayal. When the mourners entered the stage, the tableau was breathtaking. And then the sisters... From the hunchback, who gave a comical, tender, grounded performance to the eldest, whom it was actually painful at times for me to watch. I met Kathleen Reyes-Levine after the show and couldn?t figure out who she was when Nancy introduced me to her ? I had no idea she was in the play, a testament to just how good her work is, especially considering the size of the Sonnet Theatre. And then there?s Kirsten Walsh! What to say about Ms. Walsh. I?ve seen her in so many performances but rarely have I seen her in something so riveting -- hysterical and tragic at the same time ? so raw and exposed. As I told Mr. Wilhelm after the show, I was just shocked at certain times with this play ? with Kymm Zuckert, Kristin Carter, Monica OMalley and every performance in this piece. My favorite emotion is laughter through tears, and it?s in abundance here. Run, do not walk, to see this show. It?s theatre at its best. Bravo to Mr. Wilhelm, cast & crew!
