WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Meet Harry Caul, a troubled, guilt-ridden loner and surveillance expert who probes ambiguous clues for both the government and private clients, ending up very much a victim of his own technology and pursuits. Maybe more timely today than when first introduced in 1974, The Conversation is an American film classic now adapted to the stage!

This 60 seat off-off Broadway theater is a black box located in a commercial building. The company specializes in high-risk plays. A core group of regular actors bring in colleagues depending on the needs of the play it's producing.

WHAT ARE CRITICS SAYING?


It's easy to see why Francis Ford Coppola's Oscar-nominated 1974 film The Conversation would be an appealing choice for a stage production. With its focus on surveillance and moral responsibility, the work seems remarkably timely. Unfortunately, Kate Harris' adaptation of The Conversation -- first seen in Chicago in 2005 and now being directed by Leo Farley at 29th Street Rep -- has not found the right balance between a rigid adherence to Coppola's original script and reinterpreting the work specifically for the stage.
